Firefighters raise funds for gear to prevent job-related cancer

ELLSWORTH – Firefighters in Ellsworth are coming together to prevent job-related cancer.

“If we can reduce the chances of a firefighter getting cancer, you know, that’s what we’re gonna do,” Ellsworth Deputy Fire Chief Gary Saunders said.

Last winter, Ellsworth Fire Captain Bobby Dorr was diagnosed with cancer related to his job as a firefighter.

“Firefighters, being what we are, you know, we try to do for others,” Saunders said. “We try to help each other the best we can.”

The Ellsworth Professional Firefighters Local 3402 created a fundraiser, called fireFIGHTER204, and they are organizing a cornhole tournament for Sept. 5.

“Timberland Acres Campground is hosting this event at no cost,” said Kate Joseph, an Ellsworth firefighter. “On that weekend, it is their Heroes Weekend.”

The funds raised will go toward purchasing particulate hoods for all firefighters in Hancock County and Bobby’s hometown of Steuben.

“The reason why particulate hoods are so important is because it’s our first line of defense against occupational cancer,” Joseph said. “It’s one step that we can take to help protect our fellow firefighters.”

Joseph said they hope the event draws a lot of support.

“Not only to raise our monetary goal of $25,000, but to also create awareness of occupational cancer and extinguish cancer amongst firefighters all around,” Joseph said.

The participation fee is $25 per person. People can preregister by calling (207) 667-3600 or emailing tkennedy3402@outlook.com. They can also sign up the day of the event.

The Ellsworth Professional Firefighters are selling t-shirts for $20 each as well.

“If we can stop one case of cancer, it’s well worth it,” Saunders said.
