Maine aquaculture preps for future

STATEWIDE — The aquaculture industry received thousands of dollars to advance the innovation in Maine.

Members of the industry say a $216,000 grant will be used to improve the farming of plants and fish in Maine. Recipients include sea farmers and companies, which will be using the funding to test ocean farming technology.

A Maine Aquaculture Co-Op member said the infrastructure in the United States is limited.

One of the major barriers has been bringing the equipment here to the U.S because manufacturers here don’t make that specialized equipment, so we still have to source those machines from Japan and other places in Asia and bring it here,” said Caitlin Cleaver, board secretary.

“The culture will be for normal blue mussels that everyone is used to seeing and then something that is rare — a blonde or golden cubed mussel, which is also a blue mussel [but] less prevalent,” said Bob Wood, director of Downeast Fisheries Partnership.

According to Cleaver, the funding provides exciting opportunities.

The Maine Aquaculture Hub will also be accepting requests for proposals in 2021.
