Women’s recovery residence coming to Washington County
MACHIAS – Safe Harbor, a substance abuse disorder recovery residence for women and children, is coming to Washington County.
“It will serve as a safe place and supportive place for women to live, who are in recovery from substance use disorder, for them and their children,” said Penny Guisinger, recovery programs director for Healthy Acadia.
The home has five units, which are set up to accommodate different family sizes, but Guisinger said if too many applications are received, they may look into having women share bedrooms.
“It’s actually a best practice in recovery residences for residents to share sleeping spaces because it’s safer,” Guisinger said.
Applications are currently being accepted online at healthyacadia.org. This is followed by an interview.
“They might be in very early recovery. They might be further along in their recovery,” Guisinger said. “It’s really just a supportive environment for anybody for whom housing is a barrier to their success in recovery. If someone’s basic needs are not being met, it’s very hard to succeed in recovery.”
According to Guisinger, the primary purpose of the residence is to give people a place to live.
“We’ll be connecting residents to a wide variety of supports like treatment, counseling, coaching,” Guisinger said. “If they have criminal justice involvement, we will support them around that.”
Guisinger said community members have helped bring in furniture and set up the home.
“Anyone who wishes to support the house through a donation of either funding or through items, we do have an Amazon wish list, and you can just reach out to us at healthyacadia.org,” Guisinger said.
Guisinger hopes to be able to open the doors of Safe Harbor to residents within the next few weeks.
