Black bear hunting season officially underway
STATEWIDE — Monday marked marks the official start of bear hunting season in Maine.
Baiting began Monday and trapping was set to start Tuesday.
Maine has the highest black bear population of the Lower 48, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
However, not many people hunt them.
“One of the most important ways that we can ensure the bear population stays healthy and causes limited conflict with people is hunting,” said Jennifer Vashon, a bear biologist with MDIFW.
“So we’re trying to increase our harvest. We’ve been below our harvest objective since 2005,” she said.
The state’s fish and game department has released a handbook for beginner bear hunters, that you can find here.
Bear hunting season goes until Nov. 28.
