Chairlift auction to support Squaw Mountain

GREENVILLE — There’s a great chance to own a part of history while supporting one of Maine’s winter pastimes.

Big Squaw Mountain was once a premiere ski destination.

Its operators have faced hard times throughout the years — but have found ways to keep the lifts running.

A non-profit has been running the mountain since 2012.  They had been looking for a permanent owner and thought they had one until things fell through earlier this year.

“The sad thing is that in the last 30 to 40 years we have lost dozens of ski areas,” said Rodney Folsom with Friends of the Mountain. “So it’s getting harder and harder to keep them in operation. And once they close they very seldom reopen. So this one has had a storied history with a few different closures.”

The group ‘Friends of the Mountain’ has started a silent auction where you can bid to own chairs from Squaw Mountain’s summit lift.  The lift opened back in 1967 and these chairs were used until 2004.

There is a minimum bid of $500 and all proceeds go towards operation costs at the ski mountain in Greenville.

Head to the silent auction website to make a bid.

Folsom says they have around 60 chairs available.  The auction runs from Dec. 15th to the 18th.
