Hermon officials break ground on new athletic complex
HERMON — Braving the weather, Hermon officials were able to break ground and officially kick off its Athletic Complex Improvement Project.
“It’s fantastic. It’s been a long, long project up to this point. It’s so satisfying and I cannot wait for everything to be done,” said Steve Thomas, Town Council Chair for Hermon.
The upgrades to the Hermon athletic fields has been in the works for more than 20 years.
Parents have been complaining that they needed to upgrade lights at the fields and now with the financial donation from Barry Pottle and the guidance from Paul Soucey, this long awaited project is set to be done by June.
“We are adding a multi-purpose turf field as well as an eight-lane rubber track that will provide opportunity to all of our sports, our athletics, our programs, as well as the middle school, Hermon Recreation and the Hermon community,” said Brian Walsh, Hermon High School principal.
Chelsea Pottle Demmons says she’s grateful to see this project come to fruition.
“My dad started getting involved was when I was in school and it was exciting for him to see his kids be able to use this field and now it’s a whole other generation of him seeing his grandkids use this for years to come,” says Pottle Demmons.
Even though the group says these upgrades are necessary, Steve Thomas, Chair of the Hermon Track Committee says it’s the lessons these kids learn on the field that are even more important.
“It’s going to encourage the kids to work as a team and it’s going to help them set goals. It helps really develop the kids. I think they’re going to benefit from what we’re doing here later in life,” said Thomas.
The hope now is to have students taking the field by late spring.
