Orono Public Library offers family-friendly New Year’s Eve Celebration

ORONO — While many are out celebrating on New Year’s Eve, some have provided family-friendly fun for those who can’t stay up past their bedtime.

The Orono Public Library put together a year-end celebration, filled with crafts, music, snacks and a balloon drop.

Excited kids and adults alike gathered to partake in the festivities, dubbed “Noon Year’s Eve.”

According to Lindsay Varnum, the youth services librarian at the Orono Public Library, the event provided a safe space for families to enjoy the holiday, but it also focused on bringing the community together.

“We really wanted kids to be able to celebrate the new year, and we know how hard it is for kids to stay up until midnight,” said Varnum. “So, by offering something here at the library during the day, families get to celebrate together.”

At noon, balloons dropped from the ceiling, symbolically ringing in the new year for local kids.

Afterwards, the children wasted no time in popping the balloons and whirling their noisemakers in place of fireworks and party horns.

Varnum says she hopes the event will get people interested in the library, and plans to continue the tradition next year.

“We’re also hoping that people who might not come to the library can discover it and see the great things we have to offer here,” said Varnum. “Given how popular it seems to be, I think we’ll definitely continue this in the future.”
