World War II veteran honored
BANGOR – The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Maine Chapter 6 gathered at the Cole Transportation Museum Tuesday to honor Richard Proulx.
Proulx is a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
“When we discovered that we have had a life member in the state of Maine for 72 years, we thought it was important to jump through whatever necessary precautions we needed to do to recognize the service of that veteran,” said Rob McQuillan, department commander for DAV Maine.
Proulx said he normally gets nervous with a lot of people around, but he appreciates the recognition.
“All this is special,” Proulx said. “I mean, the way things are now, people don’t seem to realize just how lucky we are.”
The event included several speeches thanking Proulx for his service, and he was presented with plaques, certificates, coins, and a flag.
“On behalf of the Disabled American Veterans, I‘d like to present you this Citation of Merit awarded to Mr. Richard Proulx,” McQuillan said. “You have been a loyal member of the DAV for 72 years. In grateful appreciation for outstanding service to America’s ill and injured veterans.”
Commander of DAV Maine Chapter 6 Craig Florey said veterans gave Americans the freedoms they have today.
“They’re people like Richard who fought in Germany and went through the trials and tribulations that he did,” Florey said. “He was knocked out into snow. He was freezing to death in the snow, had to be pulled up out of it. Otherwise, they were just gonna leave him behind.”
Proulx is thankful for other veterans too.
“They’re all heroes,” Proulx said.
They all stressed the importance of remembering and honoring United States veterans.
