$1.5 million for wetland restoration in Maine
STATEWIDE — A Maine program provides funding to support the preservation of the state’s natural resources.
The Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program has awarded more than $1.5 million to projects for the conservation and restoration of wetlands in Maine.
The money will go towards 11 projects that span across five Maine counties, which will include enhancements to salt marshes to make them resilient to rising sea levels — the funds will also be used to preserve the land.
Bryan Emerson, the mitigation program manager for the Nature Conservancy in Maine, says that supporting Maine wetlands is essential to protecting the state’s environmental health.
“Wetlands are a really vital resource on our landscape, I mean they serve a lot of ecosystem services,” said Emerson. “They’re referred to often as ‘nature’s kidneys because they do a lot of cleaning of our surface water, as well, so they’re a vital resource on the landscape.”
