Department of Veteran Affairs opens Acadia National Cemetery

JONESBORO- Maine’s second VA national cemetery is now officially open.

Early Saturday, members of the U.S Department of Veteran Affairs held a special dedication ceremony to commemorate the opening of the 6.2 acre Acadia National Cemetery.

Keynote speakers for the opening included Senator Susan Collins and u.s. Department of veterans affairs secretary Robert Wilkie.

“Each and everyone of us die two deaths. We die the first time when breath leaves us, but we only die sometime in the future when no one speaks our name or tells our story. This place of reverence will be a place where those stories are told and those names are spoken forever,” Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Memorial Affairs  Randy Reeves said.

According to U.S Department of Veteran Affair’s website, construction on the first phase of the cemetery is now complete, offering space for more than 1,400 interments.

At full capacity the cemetery will be able to accommodate just over 7,000 interments.
