Bank robbery suspect in court
BANGOR —A man accused of robbing a bank in Bangor this week made his first court appearance today.
It was Tuesday afternoon when authorities say Donovan Steen, 32, held up the Bangor Savings Bank on Broadway, making off with a still undisclosed amount of cash.
In court on Friday morning it was revealed Steen is a transient and had previously served time for holding up the Penobscot County Federal Credit Union in 2011.
While no one was hurt during the latest robbery, authorities are taking the crime very seriously.
“On the scale of one to Bonny and Clyde, this is not the most serious robbery. In fact, there was no brandishing of a weapon and there’s no indication he actually had a weapon on him. He went to the tellers window and passed a note stating to give him the money and be quiet. However he did do that and left the teller in fear.”
The prosecutor says Steen’s mother told him her son is battling drug addiction and needed the money to buy drugs. He was captured the day after the robbery after tips from the public identified Steen as the suspect.
The judge ordered him to be held on $25,000 bail and banned him from visiting any Bangor Savings Bank Branch. He has also been ordered to stay away from drugs and alcohol.
