Bangor firefighters talk working on Christmas Day

BANGOR — On Christmas day. Presents are unwrapped, families and loved ones come together to spend time together and creating memories.

However, for the C-Crew at Fire One in Bangor, celebrate Christmas a bit differently. Instead, they are out and about stopping fires, responding to medical emergencies and participate in rescue missions.

“It is a special day to work., As we are not home with friends and family and sharing that time with them, but we had a nice dinner here and a lot of them came and joined us here for dinner,” said Andrew Emery, Assistant Fire Chief for Bangor Central Fire Station

Members of c-crew typically work the holidays, whether its Thanksgiving, Christmas, or even the start of the new year.

C-Crew member Keith Morin says working with his crew has created some life-long friendships.

“Everyone is truly at the station our second family away from home. We spend roughly 96 days with them,” said Morin.

Emery says working on Christmas day has it’s pros and cons.

“The advantage of knowing your schedule ahead of time is that you can plan either to do it here or alternate plans with your family for Christmas at home. I did mine yesterday with my daughter. We just make alternative plans at home to get the holidays in,” said Emery.

In the end, firefighter say they are proud to keep community members safe.

“We get to provide public safety for all the families enjoying the families with one another. They might not see each other all year so this is their chance to get together and we keep everyone safe,” said Morin.
