Ridge View Community School preps ahead of Wednesday reopening

DEXTER – This week students across the state are preparing for their return to school. Classrooms will look a lot different this year, and we were inside the Ridge View Community School in Dexter Monday morning to see how much things have changed.

Students are set to return to the class this Wednesday.

“From mask wearing to social distancing to our disinfecting plans…it’s been a lot of work,” said A.O.S. #94 Superintendent of Schools Kevin Jordan. “A lot different type [of] work than we’ve done before.”

It’ll start right when the kids get off the bus.

“Here in front of the Ridge View School which is our K through 8 school, you’ll see red tiger paws on the ground which are six feet apart,” said Jordan.

They’ll use those paws to enter the building, where their temperature will be taken every morning.

Then it’s off to the classroom.

“Swinging through to grab a breakfast if they’re doing breakfast,” said Jordan. “With one-way traffic in and one-way traffic out to avoid any contact.”

In A.O.S. 94, K through 5 students will be in school every day thanks to the addition of classrooms and specialty staff.

“We thought that was really really important.” said Jordan. “One, for their consistency of education but also to help parents as much as we can with daycare issues and things like that.”

Grades 6 through 12 will be on a hybrid model, learning remotely for three days out of the week. Jordan says all desks are distanced appropriately and plexiglass barriers are set up throughout the entire school.

“We’ve reduced the enrollment in each classroom,” Jordan said. “Lunches will be brought to students so they’ll essentially be in their same cohort of kids all day.”

Jordan says the biggest thing they’re asking students and parents is to make sure they do their pre-symptom screening every day before coming to school. And if they feel sick, to stay home.
