Acadia National Park prepares for Labor Day weekend

BAR HARBOR – Labor Day is only one week away and Acadia National Park is getting ready for the holiday.

Things are finally starting to pick up again at Acadia National Park.

When the pandemic started, the tourism season took a hit.

“We know that in July while it was down from July of last year it was only down 35%. But between June and July it went up 140%,”  said Christie Anastasia, Acadia National Park Information Officer.

The park will be running things differently on Labor Day weekend.

The Island Explorer won’t be operating so travelers are expected to have their own vehicle.

Make sure to have another place to camp because the park’s camp grounds will also be closed.

“There is no camping of that nature in this park, frankly, it is too small for that so you really want to secure your camping reservations or lodging reservations before you arrive in the area,” said Anastasia.

Most holidays are usually busy at Acadia National Park. With Labor Day being right around the corner, the park spokeswoman said to have a Plan B for when you arrive because some areas might be crowded.

According to Anastasia, wearing the best hiking gear will create a safe experience at Acadia.

“You definitely want the most comfortable clothing you can. Usually loose clothing, cotton clothing but actually the most important is a good pair of hiking shoes and a good pair of socks to go along with the hiking shoes,” said Anastasia.

Some popular areas of the park include Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain and Thunder Hole.
