AT&T launches FirstNet cell service for first responders

STONINGTON- First responders in the Stonington area got a boost in cell service thanks in part to AT&T.

This new cell site is part of the FirstNet network expansion taking place in Maine, which is bringing increased coverage and service to first responders.

On Saturday, representatives from AT&T, the cell service who helped build FirstNet in Maine, showed Stonington residents the benefits of first-net wireless service.

“Basically today we came out, the tower was just put up a few months ago with AT&T service on it, and what that brings to the town now, especially the first responders is access to a new network called FirstNet, which basically allows first responders to have access to the towers when it’s needed most,” Bangor AT&T Assistant Manager Matt Doucette said.

During the day, Doucette used the AT&T mobile sales vehicle to connect with first responders and civilians to inform them on how FirstNet works.

“It will actually drive consumer access off that network in case of a disaster or congestion or anything like that and it will allow the first responders to have access to it so there’s no worry about communication going down or anything like that,” Doucette said.

He added the concept for the idea and the cellular tower used for first net was created a few years ago but the service is still building up.

It’s brought a lot of new coverage throughout the state of Maine, specifically here in beautiful Stonington,” he said. “It’s a great day to be out here. We’re happy to be here. We’re happy to support our first responders and help them any way that we can.”
