Dirigo Reads program expands to new schools
STATEWIDE – A program providing books for first grade students in Maine is expanding.
Dirigo Reads has a goal to give a book to every first grader in Maine for every month of the school year.
The program started last year with six communities and added 20 more communities this year.
According to the co-founder, Dirigo Reads gave out nearly 3,300 books last year.
“Reading is something that can bring people right back to normalcy. Kids can get lost in a good book and let their imaginations run wild,” said Dan Cashman, co-founder of Dirigo Reads.
Cashman hopes to provide books for students for throughout the state by 2025.
