Downeast YMCA filling the gap for Ellsworth students
ELLSWORTH- Officials from Downeast Area YMCA have announced that they’re going to fill the gap for Ellsworth students taking hybrid learning.
A new program called Remote School Age Care is coming to Ellsworth for Kindergarten through 8th grade students and families who opted for hybrid learning.
“We’re working in collaboration with the Ellsworth School Department. The Ellsworth schools have gone into a hybrid form so what we’re doing is providing that school remote care support for kids that are not in school at those certain days,” Downeast YMCA CEO Peter Farragher said.
He added this program is also coming to the Bucksport area, as the Bucksport YMCA will also be helping students on their days learning outside of school
“The days the kids are not in school, if they want to sign up in the YMCA program, we will guide them through the remote process in collaboration with the school department,” Farragher said.
Beginning on September 8, students will be sent to the Moore Community Center for the day.
Farragher said the program costs $45 dollars per day, with scholarships available for students who qualify for free and reduced lunches.
In the program, the YMCA staff will be providing meals and be trained by the school department so they can provide extra assistance extra assistance.
“They come to the Y so their parents can go to work and it’s really designed for the working families or people that their remote skills are not their cup of tea,” Farragher said.
Families can pick the specific days and flexible schedule that they need.
“We’re going to be following the same guidelines that the school does, the six feet separation, having masks, but we have additional space so that we can offer the program and at the same time keep the kids safe,” Farragher said.
Currently half of the spots in the remote school age care are taken so Farragher says for parents interested in the program, contact the Downeast Area YMCA directly.
