EMCC to acquire food donations in Fill the Truck food drive

BANGOR- In order to get food for their food pantry, Eastern Maine Community College administration officials have okayed the Fill the Van Food Drive.

The college’s Fill the Van Food Drive will be going on all day September 3 starting at 8 a.m. with the van being located at the Acess Rd, intersection in front of Maine Hall

The food pantry was created in february with the food that’s donated going straight to EMCC students.

“The pantry just kind of got off the ground when the pandemic hit and one of the reasons it was really successful before students had to leave campus was a lot of staff and faculty were able to donate stuff to the food pantry to help our students,” said Mike Schwabenbauer, the director of TRIO student support services at EMCC.

He said because of the pandemic, people won’t be able to just walk in and drop off or pick up food like before.

“Probably what we would do, we’d probably just have it with people just coming into Maine Hall and just drop stuff off. but because we can’t have people entering the building and there’s very strict protocols, we can’t have people showing up willy-nilly,”  Schwabenbauer said.

He said the school is also creating online ordering forms for students to fill out if they want to do curbside pickup and they’re making a delivery program for students who live within 60 miles of campus.

“Every Wednesday from 10-2 we’re going to do curbside pick up in the back of Maine Hall for EMCC students who want to stop and pick up prepackaged food to go,” he said.
