Family devastated after their home burns down
ETNA — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire that broke out in Etna Tuesday morning.
“We responded. Carmel got here before we did. They said the whole building was totally engulfed,” said Leroy Hall, Assistant Fire Chief of the Etna Volunteer Fire Department.
“We were at work and got the call saying the house was on fire from the guy here and we got here as soon as we could ,” said Skylar Whitley, a member of the family.
According to neighbors in the area, by the time the Fire Departments arrived, the fire had a big head start.
Firefighters went to work trying to save as much as they could. Unfortunately, they were dealing with a fast moving blaze.
“Well, water. Our hydrant down here didn’t work so they had to go and fill water, and to just get enough crew to fight the fire,” said Hall.
Dealing with the loss of their homestead, the Whitleys are thinking of more than the house itself, but what is inside the home they fear is ruined.
“We just don’t understand what we did to have this go on and it’s a total loss of the house and everything of my grandfather’s that he worked for for 38 years is gone just like that,” said Skylar Whitley.
A total loss, but they are glad no one was home when the fire broke out. Their German Shepard King was home at the time, but hasn’t been found.
They are hoping he ran off and will return soon.
“This was my home, just as much as my aunt and my grandfather’s. It was home,” said Skylar Whitley.
