Maine Department of Labor continues to investigate unemployment fraud

STATEWIDE — The Maine Department of Labor is continuing to investigate unemployment imposter fraud.

The department canceled about 380 initial claims and 50 weekly certifications after determining they were fraudulent during the week ending Aug. 22, according to a news release.

The release also said the Maine Department of Labor recorded approximately 1,100 initial claims filed for state unemployment insurance and 1,300 filed for federal pandemic unemployment assistance during that week. That put the total for first time unemployment claims at nearly 2,400, a bump from the previous week.

Between March 15 and Aug. 22, $1.4 billion has been paid by the Maine Department of Labor in federal and state unemployment benefits.
