Murder suspect asks to be released from jail
BELFAST — An accused murderer from Waldo County is asking to be released from jail for medical reasons while he awaits his trial.
Austin McDevitt of Morrill, 24, is charged in the March 15, 2019 shooting death of 26-year-old Shane Sauer of Belfast.
A judge delayed any decision until at least the end of September and ordered attorneys to submit written arguments before he rules on the request.
McDevitt told detectives he shot Sauer seven times after Sauer arrived at a camper on Oak Hill Road in Swanville, where he was sleeping with a woman the two men were fighting over.
Justice Robert Murray ruled earlier this year that much of his confession will not be admissible in court.
McDevitt has been held without bail since his arrest. He turned himself into police.
Before the coronavirus arrived, McDevitt’s trial had been scheduled for the end of April.
A new court date has yet to be set.
