New complex coming for Howland town office, fire department and EMS

HOWLAND — The town’s municipal offices are getting a new home that will include space for the fire department and emergency medical services.

“It’s gonna be a great facility and a great upgrade for the Town of Howland,” said Town Manager David Lloyd.

Lloyd said the the town formed a public safety committee two years ago consisting of members of the select board, fire department and EMS.

“The reason for that committee was to come up with a building that met our needs today and our needs for the future,” Lloyd said.

According to Lloyd, the services have grown drastically over the years.

“Years ago, we had a call fire department. The building wasn’t staffed all the time,” Lloyd said. “We now currently have a full time EMS/fire department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Lloyd said the building currently located in the lot on Bridge Street will be knocked down replaced with the new one.

“It’s actually a better location for a facility like this,” Lloyd said. “Our current fire station is right in a residential neighborhood.”

He said the fire department and EMS will be located on the bottom level, and the municipal offices will be in a second part of the building.

“You’ll access the municipal offices by going around the building and the main entrance for that facility will be on the back of the building,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd estimated the cost to be about $3.4 million.

“We’re going out to bid this month,” Lloyd said. “Hopefully the bid’s gonna return in a couple, three weeks, and we’ll be opening them up, reviewing them, and we’ll pick a contractor to move going forward.”

Lloyd predicted the project will take about a year and a half.
