Plowing industry seeing boost from snowstorms

BANGOR — The thought of snow causes headaches for many. Back pain for others having to go outside and dig out their cars and driveways.

However, plow drivers and companies supplying snow equipment have been capitalizing on this very busy winter storm season.

“Sales have picked up considerably. As soon as the first of the year hit, it’s been non-stop. Our phones haven’t stopped ringing,” said Aaron Libby, general manager for Scott’s Recreation

“It’s an important job. It’s a tough job but we enjoy doing it,” said James Gallant, owner of Bangor Lawn and Landscape.

According to Gallant, owner of Bangor Lawn and Landscape, he hasn’t seen it snow this frequently in Maine for a long time. He’s doing his best to keep up with the demand.

“The last four or five years, we haven’t had a lot of snow. Now that it hasn’t snowed in the beginning of the winter, it’ll snow pretty well through the end of January into February,” said Gallant.

Aaron Libby, the general manager of Scott’s Recreation in Orono, says he typically sells parts to commercial companies, but with the amount of snow the region is receiving, he’s been seeing much more of a demand for personal snowblowers and tractors.

“Everyone’s looking for implements. Not just commercial guys either, it’s been homeowners. We sell all the way down to the smaller sub-compact 21-horsepower tractors. It’s not a commercial thing anymore,” said Libby.

Heading deeper into the winter season, Gallant says his team is prepared to take care of all snowstorms being anticipated in the future.

“Our expectations are that we’re going to have an active weather pattern right through the end of February. Our crews are trained and ready and able to make sure the roadways and everything stays clear for the next six weeks,” said Gallant.
