Referendum signatures submitted
AUGUSTA- The No Blank Checks campaign submitted over 93,000 signatures to the Maine Secretary of State today.
The signatures are in support of a referendum next November which would give Maine voters the chance to approve or reject new government debt of over one billion dollars.
Supporters of the measure say backers of the Pine Tree Power proposal to take over the state’s privately -owned utilities want voters to approve seizure of the companies without knowing how much that would cost.
The No Blank Checks initiative would require a separate, statewide vote to approve borrowing more than one billion dollars.
Some estimates put the price tag of the take over at more than 13 billion dollars.
The Secretary of State’s Office has 30 days to certify the signatures.
