Vinalhaven voters to discuss policing at special meeting Wednesday

VINALHAVEN –– Residents are being asked to decide how much they want to spend on law enforcement until the island finds a more permanent solution.

Residents decided last month not to renew the contract with Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

At a special town meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, residents will discuss the amount of tax money they want to use for police protection and then vote on allocating the funds.

“The board is interested in providing something for this community because at this moment we have almost no patrol out here. There is very few shifts being provided through Knox County at the moment,” said Town Manager Andrew Dorr.

Dorr said the meeting is a workshop to provide a temporary remedy so town leaders have time to continue to work on a more lasting solution.

The special town meeting is being held outside at the Vinalhaven school to accommodate social distancing.

Residents will also vote on amendments to the Vinalhaven harbor ordinance.
