Maine resident flying from Bangor to Louisiana to join disaster relief efforts
The American Red Cross volunteer’s continue to help out around the country.
The latest Red Cross volunteer from Maine is heading to Louisiana today to join disaster relief efforts caused by Hurricane Laura.
Richard Hoppe from Portage Lake, Maine will begin as a shelter worker when he arrives from Bangor International Airport to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Hoppe says after working with people his whole life he has learned the importance of empathy and understands people are hurting.
“Our main mission is to alleviate suffering in cases of emergency like we have now in Louisiana. They have already had people there for 3 weeks (2 and a half weeks), and I am going down there to alleviate them, said Hoppe prior to his flight this morning.
Hoppe added that he, as well as the other volunteers, have been specially trained in Covid-19 safety practices.
