Online filing coming to Bangor, Penobscot County courts
BANGOR — The state is rolling out a new way to file court documents online in Bangor, and on Wednesday began training lawyers.
Chief Justice Andrew Mead of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court led the training on eFileMaine.
The new eCourts electronic system is scheduled to go online Oct. 5 for most new and pending civil cases and family matters in the Bangor District Court and Penobscot County Superior Court, as well as the statewide Business Consumer Docket.
“We’re having a two-hour Zoom meeting for the Maine bar on this new electronic filing in state court. This is a training session. It’s going to be very similar to federal court, I guess,” said Bangor attorney Laurence Willey of Willey Law Offices.
Federal courts began using electronic filings in nationwide in 2002, and the appellate courts were added in 2005.
Most courts in Maine accept some documents by email or fax but others, including Washington County, currently require all paperwork be filed in person.
The eCourts system should be available for all types of cases by 2022.
